Current Mille Lacs Lake water temps are mid 50's in the bays, and upper 40's to lower 50's on the main lake. Exceptionally warm and calm conditions have inflated the surface temps, making accurate water temps difficult to discern.
The walleye bite has been great in the shallows over the past few days. Small swim baits and quarter oz jigs have been producing many fish in 6' to 12'. Natural colors and a slow retrieve near bottom have been best.The evening bobber bite has also been producing fish in 6' to 18'. Rock to gravel transitions, or the tops of rock reefs have been producing keepers. On the north end of the lake, the sand bite continues as usual for this time of year. Dragging Lindy rigs and shiners is the best method on that end.
The smallmouth bite has been excellent. On cooler mornings, small swim baits fished near large rock, or rock/sand transitions have been working well. When water temps warm up, shallow reefs and bays start to fire up. The afternoon jerk bait bite has been phenomenal.
